Our Programs

At AMATELA, we take a collaborative approach to conserving and sustainably managing the Tela Bay Marine Wildlife Refuge (RVSMBT).

We co-manage this protected area with the Forest Conservation Institute (ICF), the Municipality of Tela, and the Tela Marine Research Center, promoting conservation through the legal and technical implementation of shared management practices.

Our programs combine protection, education, research, management, and communication to strengthen marine biodiversity conservation and enhance the well-being of local communities. Through strategic alliances with public, private, and academic institutions, we promote coordinated actions that support decision-making, foster community participation, and ensure the long-term sustainability of the marine protected area.

Protection and Surveillance Program

This program is dedicated to protecting the marine protected area and preserving the biodiversity of Tela Bay. It is jointly implemented with the Forest Conservation Institute, the Municipality of Tela, and DIGEPESCA (General Directorate of Fisheries and Aquaculture).

Environmental Education Program

This program trains users and local residents in best environmental practices; educates children, youth, and adults in environmental stewardship; and raises public awareness about the importance of coral reefs through non-formal education.

Research Program

This program focuses on researching and monitoring coral reefs and their associated ecosystems to inform management decisions within the marine protected area. It is carried out in collaboration with the Forest Conservation Institute, the Municipality of Tela, the Tela Marine Research Center, the Coral Reef Alliance, Healthy Reefs, academic partners, CIAT, and other institutions.

Management and Administration Program

This program is grounded in policies and procedures for managing financial and human resources within both the institution and the protected area. Objectives: - Manage national and international funds for developing and implementing projects and programs within the Refuge. - Work toward the organization's self-sustainability for program implementation.

Institutional Communication Program

This program increases the institution's visibility through a marketing plan, presenting a positive image to local governments, government entities, private companies, the general public, and donors to help achieve the organization's objectives.
